Having attended both Haskell Indian Nations University and Oregon State University. In 1997 Jim, received a B.S. in Crop and Soil Science from OSU and became the District Soil Scientist for the Diamond Lake Ranger District. This work allowed for him to learn soil management among the very poorly developed volcanic soils created by the explosion of Mt Mazama (Crater Lake). While building his Forest Service Career; he has worked in Fire Fighting, Wildfire Resource Advising and Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Teams. In addition to his work disclosing project effects for NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) he completed two soil restoration patents (equipment patents) for the Forest Service.

In the last 5 years of his career, he joined State, Private and Tribal Forestry, as a physical scientist; within the Forest Service Wood Innovations Program. During that last 5 years, Jim added an additional patent (Biochar Production) to his previous two soil restoration patents (Subsoiling Equipment). Across his career he also received many awards notably in 2011 Field Soil Scientist of the Year (FS), 2019 he was part of a team awarded both the FS Chiefs Award and USDA Under Secretary’s Award. In 2020 the same Wood Innovation team, also was received the USDA Secretary’s Honor Award.
