Indigenous Rights Attorney at Henkels Law, LLC & Executive Director at Maqlaqs Gaa’tkni
Juliette A. Jackson, J.D, LL.M is an Indigenous Rights Advocate specialized in energy and environmental law, and an enrolled member of The Klamath Tribes (located in Northern California and Southern Oregon). She works at Henkels Law, LLC in Portland, Oregon and also serves as Executive Director of the nonprofit Maqlaqs Gaa’tkni (MG), a native-led nonprofit based in Chiloquin, Oregon, and serves tribal members in Northern California and Oregon. Whose mission is to restore ecosystems through traditional ecological knowledge while promoting healthy lifestyles and sustainability.
Jackson is passionate about tribal environmental justice and is part of the Protecting Mother Earth (PME) Collective. PME is a joint partnership between the Indigenous Environmental Network and Earth Law Center; a monthly gathering of Indigenous leaders and partners who discuss rights of nature initiatives and ways to implement Inherent Relationship Jurisprudence (IRJ). Jackson is assisting tribal clients based on the west coast with IRJ initiatives.
She authored the law review article Stop Killing the Klamath: Rights of Nature Protections with Tribal Law, the National Historic Preservation Act, and Collaborative Management Strategies for a Tribe on the Front Lines of Climate Change, which has attracted substantial attention in the field of tribal environmental justice. Jackson has presented her research at various private, public, and academic forums. Her team at MG is taking action to implement the legal solutions proposed in her publication by leading a rights of nature community cultural preservation project.
