Professor of Environmental Geography at CSU Chico
Don Hankins is a Professor of Environmental Geography at CSU Chico, and also the field director for the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve. His expertise includes pyrogeography, conservation, and Indigenous land and water stewardship, informed by his knowledge as a Miwkoʔ traditional cultural practitioner.
His research focuses on wildland fire, with an emphasis on landscape-scale cultural and prescribed burning and their implications for biodiversity conservation and environmental change.
Don works across environmental stewardship, policy, and conservation with organizations and agencies, including Indigenous entities in North America and Australia. He is internationally recognized for his work on Indigenous fire and serves in advisory roles supporting Indigenous stewardship and wildfire resilience.
